Our Story: A Journey of Hope and Dreams

 

Welcome to The Heart & Joy Project. My name is Giselle Bassey, and I am a 15-year-old year old early high school graduate as well as a college student. I was born at just 24 weeks, fighting against the odds from my very first breath. Growing up in and out of the hospital, my childhood was filled with the beeping of heart monitors, the scent of antiseptic, and the soft whispers of my mom trying to cheer me up amidst the sterile walls of the hospital. I remember the faint sound of laughter echoing through the halls, where other kids and I would share stories and dreams, even as they laid thinking they were confined to their beds or wheelchairs, longing for a world beyond those walls.

 

Day after day, I saw my other patients battling their own challenges, each one of them carrying a spark of hope that flickered amidst their struggles. I was lucky enough to chase my dreams while many of them felt trapped in their circumstances, their dreams waiting just out of reach. I often thought about how it felt to be free, to run, to play, to dance, and to be just a kid. It broke my heart to see the resilience of other patients—some who never had the chance to pursue their passions, their laughter muffled by the weight of their illnesses.

 

Now, I am determined to change that. Through The Heart & Joy Project, I aim to empower pediatric patients to chase their dreams, just as I finally found the courage to do. I want to be the voice for those who feel unheard, the light for those who feel lost. Together, we can create opportunities for kids like me to embrace their passions, whether it’s art, music, sports, or any dream they hold dear. Join me in making a difference in the lives of these incredible young fighters. Together, we can remind them that their dreams are valid and attainable, and that they are never alone in their journey.
